Richard Donnell Ross was born on January 26, 1960 to Annie Mauldin and Sony Ross in Troup, Texas. His mother came from a family of sharecroppers, and his father was a pig farmer and a former cook for the Army.
By the age of three, Ricky and his mother moved to Los Angeles, California. Ricky grew up having a knack for sports, especially tennis, but he never got to pursue those skills.
Ricky had a hard time reading, and as a result, he missed out on opportunities to go to college. Shortly after high school, Ricky had gotten involved with an illegal chop shop, and that was the beginning of his career as a criminal.
Soon after Ross began working in a chop shop in the early 1980s, he was exposed to cocaine, and he started to sell it. By 1983, Ross managed to popularize and become Los Angeles’s biggest distributor of cocaine. In the following year, Ricky’s market became national, and he had dealers across the nation selling about 1000 pounds of cocaine per week.
The profits that were made from the drug empire were invested into businesses and properties, and he worked with the intention of hiding his lifestyle from his mother. In fact, the nickname “Freeway” is believed to have come from Ross owning a series of properties along the Los Angeles Interstate 110, which is also known as Harbor Freeway.
Now that Ross is out of prison, he is a philanthropist and a public figure. He’s also the author of Freeway Rick Ross: The Untold Autobiography, and co-author of The 21 Keys of Success. Ross’s most recent venture is his boxing management company, Team Freeway Boxing, with five fighters already signed on board.
While in prison, Ross had enough time on his hands to learn how to read, so he did. Not only did he accomplish learning how to read, but he also managed to help himself out of his predicament through reading.
Ross read about 300 books while locked away, and learned some laws that helped him shorten his life sentence and get out of prison in 2009. This experience is what allowed Ross to develop his passions and reroute his career to do something that helps other people.
He now lives with his wife Sergeant Mychosia Nightingale, and their two children in Southern California where he continues to work to help improve the lives of others around him.
The modern-day value of Ricky‘s earnings in the 1980s amounts to over $900 million, with a profit of almost $300 million.
His empire also grew to include at least 42 cities between Los Angeles, California, and New York, New York. Within the first year of regularly selling the drug, Ricky was easily selling $3 million worth of cocaine per day.
Before being convicted, he was recognized as the richest drug dealer in the United States.
