Richard Donnell Ross was born on January 26, 1960 to Annie Mauldin and Sony Ross in Troup, Texas. His mother came from a family of sharecroppers, and his father was a pig farmer and a former cook for the Army.
By the age of three, Ricky and his mother moved to Los Angeles, California. Ricky grew up having a knack for sports, especially tennis, but he never got to pursue those skills.
