His mother, Lillian (Laney), was a telephone operator, and his father, Charles Edward Murphy, was a transit police officer, and an amateur comedian and actor. Murphy was raised in the borough’s Bushwick neighborhood. Murphy’s father died in 1969 when he was 8. 

When Murphy was eight, he and his elder brother lived in foster care for one year when their single mother became ill temporarily. Murphy has said in interviews that his time in foster care was influential in developing his sense of humor. 

Eventually, his mother recovered, and he and his brother moved to Roosevelt, New York, where they were raised by his mother and stepfather Vernon Lynch, a foreman at an ice cream plant.
