Richard Anthony “Cheech” Marin was born on July 13, 1946 in South Los Angeles, California, to Mexican American parents Oscar, a police officer for the LAPD, and Elsa, a secretary. Marin was born with a cleft lip, which was surgically repaired. Marin identifies himself as a Chicano. He speaks some Spanish and often uses it in his movies, but he is not fluent.

Marin got the nickname “Cheech” as a baby when his uncle said he looked like a little chicharron, fried pork rind, which is a popular Latin American cuisine. Marin graduated from Bishop Alemany High School. He then attended San Fernando Valley State College, now California State University, Northridge, where he studied English. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa and graduated in 1968.

In 1967, Marin auditioned to sing for Frank Zappa. He then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia later that year to avoid being drafted during the Vietnam War. Marin met his future comedic partner, Tommy Chong, in Calgary, Alberta.

The highly successful comedy duo Cheech and Chong participated in a number of comedy albums and feature film comedies in the 1970s and 1980s. 

They released their debut comedy album “Cheech and Chong” in 1971 followed by “Big Bambu” in 1972, “Los Cochinos” in 1973, and “Cheech and Chong’s Wedding Album” in 1974. The first two comedy albums went Gold in the U.S.  

Later films and television work

Cheech & Chong made their first feature film, “Up in Smoke,” in 1978. The film grossed $44.3 million at the box office, which is about $151 million today after adjusting for inflation. In the beginning of the 1980s, the pair released one film per year until the mid-1980s. They starred in Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, Nice Dreams, Things Are Tough All Over, Still Smokin, Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers, and Get Out of My Room.

The comedic duo split up in 1985. However, they still worked together occasionally in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1992, they were voice actors in the film FernGully: The Last Rainforest.

2000, they guest-starred in an episode of South Park. In 2008, the duo reunited for the Light Up America comedy tour. They also appeared on the  TBS special “Cheech & Chong: Roasted” where they were roasted by fellow comedians and actors. In 2011, the duo voiced themselves on The Simpsons. 2013, they co-starred in Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie!

1987, Marin wrote, directed, and starred in Born in East LA. In 1989, he appeared in Ghostbusters II, and Troop Beverly Hills. In 1990, he appeared in Far Out Man. From 1992 to 1993, he played Chuy Castillos on The Golden Girls spin-off, The Golden Palace. He has also guest starred in several shows, including Tales from the Crypt in 1993, Dream On in 1994, and Sesame Street in 1995.   

From 1996 to 2001, he co-starred with Don Johnson on the CBS series Nash Bridges, appearing in 120 episodes. In 2001, he played Felix Gumm The Fake Uncle in Spy Kids. He reprised his role in Spy Kids 2, and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.

In recent years, Cheech has voiced characters in The Book of Life in 2014, El Americano: The Movie in 2016, and Coco in 2017.

Marin has released two best-selling albums in the children’s music genre. In 1992, he released “My name is Cheech, The School Bus Driver.” 1997, he released “My name is Cheech, The School Bus Driver ‘Coast to Coast.’ Both Albums were released bilingually. 

2007, Marin released the book “Cheech the School Bus Driver.” In 2005, he lent his voice to the animated children’s series Dora the Explorer.  

Personal Life

In 1975, Marin married Darlene Morley, who was a co-producer of Cheech & Chong’s “The Corsican Brothers.” She also played minor roles in earlier Cheech & Chong films under the name Rikki Marin. Marin and Darlene have one child together. The couple divorced in 1984.

In 1986, Marin married Patti Heid, an artist. They have two children and have since divorced. In 2009, Marin married his longtime girlfriend, Russian pianist Natasha Rubin. They reside in Malibu, California.
