Early Life

Anthony Michael Hall was born on Easter Sunday on April 14, 1968, in West Roxbury, a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Hall was the only child of Mercedes Hall, a blues-jazz singer. Mercedes and Hall’s father, Larry, an auto-body shop owner, divorced when Hall was six months old. Hall and his mother relocated to the West Coast when he was three. There, she found work as a featured singer. They moved to New York City a year and a half later where Hall grew up. 

Anthony Michael Hall is of Irish and Italian ancestry. He has one half-sister, Mary Chestaro, from his mother’s second marriage to Thomas Chestaro, a show business manager. His sister is a singer under the name Mary C. 

Anthony Hall uses the name Anthony instead of Michael. When he entered show business, there was another actor named Michael Hall who was already a member of the Screen Actors Guild. As a result, he transposed his first and middle names.   

Hall attended St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s School of New York before moving on to Manhattan’s Professional Children’s School. He began acting at the age of eight and continued to act while in high school. Throughout his young acting career, Hall was managed by his mother. She eventually relinquished her role to her second husband, Thomas Chestaro.

Anthony Hall began acting at the age of 7. He started his career by starring in commercials. He was the Honeycomb cereal kid. He also appeared in several commercials for toys and Bounty candy bars. 

He made his stage debut in 1977 when he was cast as the young Steven Allen in production of Steve Allen’s semi-autobiographical play The Wake. He went on to appear in Woody Allen’s play St. Joan of the Microphone at the Lincoln Centre Festival. 

In 1980, Hall portrayed a young Edgar Allan Poe in the film The Gold Bug, In 1982, he played Huckleberry Finn in the movie Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. 

His first big-screen appearance was in the 1982 film Six Pack. The following year, he played Rusty Griswold in National Lampoon’s Vacation. The film grossed $61.4 million against a $15 million budget. 

In 1984 he appeared in John Hughes’ film Sixteen Candles. In 1985, he reunited with Hughes in his films The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. In the same year, he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as the youngest member ever. However, he was fired at the end of the season as were Robert Downey Jr., Terry Sweeney, Joan Cusack, and Randy Quaid. 

After his rather short stint with SNL, he starred in the film Out of Bounds in 1986, and in Johnny Be Good in 1988. 

1990s

In 1990, Anthony Hall co-starred with Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s film Edward Scissorhands. He also appeared in the comedy A Gnome Named Gnorm. He also had a role in the short film Whatever Happened to Mason Reese, where he voiced the title character. 

In 1992, he appeared in Into the Sun. The following year, he had a role in Six Degrees of Separation and guest-starred in Tales from the Crypt. In 1994, he starred in Hail Caesar and Who Do I Gotta Kill?

He then appeared in 1995’s NYPD Blue, Murder, She Wrote in1996, and Touched by an Angel also in 1996. In 1997, Anthony Hall quest starred in Jamie Foxx Show and Diagnosis: Murder.
